 Some 110km from Juticalpa in the west of the department of Olancho,
LA UNIÓN is a pleasant mountain town and the most convenient point of
departure for Parque Nacional La Muralla , 15km north. Its location,
around halfway along a backdoor bus route between Tegucigalpa and La
Ceiba, also makes it a handy stopover between the capital and the north
coast. However, if you're considering travelling along this remote road
it's essential you determine the current security situation first, as
there have been regular hold-ups and robberies (of buses and private
cars) in the last few years. Check in the COHDEFOR office in Juticalpa
before you set out.
Accommodation in La Unión is limited to the very basic Hotel La Muralla
and Hotel Karol (both up to US$5). There are a couple of comedores
around the Parque Central for meals. If you intend to visit La Muralla,
you need to register at the COHDEFOR office (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm), three
blocks from the Parque Central; the office can also help organize
transport into the park.
